Soil is health: exploring alpine and medical geology

Geology lecture and guided field excursion in the Natisone Valleys, led by a hydrogeology specialist.

Saturday – Introductory Lecture:

  • Multimedia presentation on Alpine geology and the water cycle
  • Explanation of hydrogeology: aquifers, springs, rock permeability, drainage basins
  • Introduction to medical geology: how rock composition impacts health
  • Analysis of geological and hydrogeological maps of the Natisone Valleys
  • Simulations and experiments on filtration and permeability
  • Guided discussion on environmental and health impacts related to local geology.

Sunday – Field Excursion:

  • Observation of rock outcrops and identification of lithologies
  • Visit to natural springs and analysis of hydrogeological context
  • Water sampling and testing (pH, conductivity, hardness)
  • Field measurements: spring flow rate, water temperature, mineral content
  • Discussion on the link between geology and human health
  • Mapping and orientation activities with GPS and topographic maps
  • Ecological and cultural reflections connected to geology and the territory.
