49th Mountain Festival Historical hike on Matajur: along the attack route followed by Erwin Rommel

Location: Rifugio Pelizzo, monte Matajur, Montemaggiore


Sunday, September 7th at 9:30 AM, meet at Rifugio Pelizzo, Matajur mountain, Montemaggiore, Savogna.

Itinerary: Rifugio Pelizzo – Top of Mount Matajur – Return.

Key points of interest: detailed reconstruction on the battlefield of the events that took place on the Matajur massif between October 24 and 26, 1917, using in particular German military memoirs and historical sources (Erwin Rommel's memoir and the diaries of the regiments of the 12th "Silesian" Division) and Italian sources (regimental diaries and reports of the officers of the Salerno Brigade); visit to the remains of the military road and the field positions existing on site; description of the panoramic scenery of the Julian Prealps and the Natisone Valleys.

Difficulty: moderate/average (400 metres elevation gain, approximately 8 kilometres).

Guides: Antonio De Toni, environmental excursion guide – local history expert, and Marco Pascoli, expert on World War I sites and environmental excursion guide.

Required equipment: hiking clothing and footwear, water.

Dogs are welcome if well-behaved.

Excursion organised with the support of the Natisone and Torre Mountain Community.
