Meeting point: at 9 a.m. at the parking lot of the sports field in Tribil Superiore/Gorenji Tarbij (in the municipality of Stregna/Srednje)

Nature guide Marco Pascolino will take us to the secret realm of the centuries-old chestnut trees of Dughe, in the Natisone Valleys.

What does the chestnut tree symbolize for these highlands? How important are its wood and fruit?
The chestnut tree, present in all houses and barns, provided resources to be exchanged with the plains in return for basic necessities. We will learn to recognize this plant and identify the scars left by man-made grafts to grow nutritious and easily marketable varieties.

We will discover ancient knowledge passed down by elders about the traditional uses of this plant.
Among the roots of these trees, we will look for the dens and tracks of some of the inhabitants of our woods, such as badgers and wild boars, and we will look up among the branches in search of passing jays.

This will be followed by lunch featuring typical dishes from the Natisone Valleys at the Burnjak festival, with the following menu:

  • Orzotto with vegetables, lovage, and Frant cheese from the Cividale Dairy
  • Sausage from the Snidaro farm and cappucci with apples
  • Chestnuts from the Natisone Valleys
