The mountains of the Kolovrat ridge surround the monument dedicated to the first Italian soldier killed in World War I, right here on Kolovrat. On foot, we will hike a section of the Kolovrat range—a place of connection, bonds, and borders—entering a striking landscape of World War I walkways, tunnels, and trenches.
We will recount the tragic events of the Battle of Caporetto, Rommel’s actions, and the tense moments leading up to the capture of Guido Sironi and machine gunner Paolo Peli. Inside the tunnels and trenches, we will experience what “trench life” was like for soldiers during that long and devastating conflict.
Equally evocative will be the almost spring-like scenery of meadows and flowers, along with the silence of the Poets’ Path: stone plaques engraved with the words of some of the most renowned war poets—tragic verses written under the constant shadow of death. Along the route, the poem “Soči” (“To the Isonzo”) by Simon Gregorčič—poet of Caporetto/Kobarid—will be read; in 1879, with prophetic insight, he foresaw the coming “terrible storm.”
Program:
- 9:00 AM – Meeting point and registration at Rifugio Solarie (Municipality of Drenchia)
- 4:30 PM – Return to Rifugio Solarie for lunch.
Menu:
- First course: Leek and potato soup / Pasta with meat sauce / Pasta with mushrooms
- Main course: Čevapčiči / Deer sausage / Wild boar sausage / Frico / Herb omelet
- Side dish: Beans with radicchio
- 0.25 l of wine and 0.5 l of water.

The path:
- Distance: approx. 8 km (5 miles)
- Elevation gain: approx. 150 m (490 ft)
- The hike follows non-technical trails, but a basic level of fitness is required.
- Proper hiking clothing and gear, a flashlight, and sufficient water are required.
- A free shuttle van (8 seats only) is available from Ponte San Quirino to Solarie/Solarije Pass (Municipality of Drenchia), departing at 8:15 AM.
Costs: 30 € per person (includes guide and refreshments with drinks at Rifugio Solarie)
