One cannot speak of the Blumarji without mentioning Montefosca/Čarni Varh, nor can one speak of Montefosca/Čarni Varh without thinking of the Blumarji. In this inseparable bond takes shape one of the last traces of an archaic ritual – a Carnival that unfolds through gestures, sounds, movements, colors, meanings, and emotions, all in constant transformation.

The Blumarji, young people dressed in white with large tree-shaped headdresses made of colored paper and bells tied around their waists, revived the beauty of the season with their run. Above all, they represented a rite of initiation and the passing of a symbolic torch between generations: a torch solid and secure, yet colored by celebration.

Awakening the earth after its long winter sleep: this is Carnival in its archaic roots. And this is what happens every year in Montefosca/Čarni Varh, when the Blumarji run through its two hamlets.

Today, the run involves everyone: children, teenagers, and adults. Depopulation has united the community, and the ritual has become intergenerational, giving new forms to a tradition that continues to move and inspire.
