On Friday, March 20 at 6:00 PM, the Slovenski kulturni dom in San Pietro al Natisone/Špeter will host the Slovene permanent theatre (Slovensko stalno gledališče), performing the comedy “Prebrisane male laži” (Clever little lies), directed by Joe DiPietro.
| A comedy about love, marriage, and living together through good times and bad raises questions about closely guarded family secrets and, with a witty touch, brings serious social themes to the forefront—especially issues surrounding (inter)generational differences, as well as the ethical and moral principles of individuals in contemporary society. At the heart of the Broadway comedy Clever little lies lies the question of truth: are we really honest with one another in our romantic and family relationships? Is it sometimes better to keep certain things unsaid so we don’t hurt the other person? Or is it always best to tell the truth and ease our conscience, even if that might mean destroying a long-standing relationship? In this comedy, the suspicious behavior of a husband—who has learned a secret from his son—turns his wife into a kind of detective. Skillfully, but also somewhat intrusively, she pulls both their son and daughter-in-law into her “investigation.” Family conversations naturally reveal far more than the original reason for the confrontation, yet they also open the path to untangling every knot. Generational differences become clearly visible, but in the end some stories never really change, and the wisdom of the older generation helps the younger one see a little further ahead. At the same time, the play highlights important social shifts: today, older generations are often far more relaxed and liberal than younger ones, who tend to have less sensitivity for life’s “shades of gray.” |
