On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., a public consultation on bilingual place names will be held in the municipal council chamber in San Pietro al Natisone/Špeter.
The event is organized by the Central Office for the Slovenian Language of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in cooperation with the Slovenian Research Institute (SLORI). The consultation will present the Central Office’s work on bilingual place names, as well as the first results of the Working Group for the Standardization of Slovenian Place Names in Italy.
The initiative to establish the working group began in 2023, when an update of the national geographic database revealed that there was no single, officially agreed-upon list of Slovenian place names in Italy. The working group is therefore systematically collecting and examining historical, linguistic, and cartographic sources and seeking solutions that can promote greater consistency in the use of place names while preserving the richness of local variants and the linguistic heritage of the Slovenian-speaking area.
The consultation will provide an opportunity to present the results achieved so far and hear from experts, while also encouraging a shared discussion about future directions for bilingual place names.
