Kolovrat / Colovrat

The history of World War I on the ridge of Mount Colovrat, the extreme line of defence during the Battle of Caporetto.

Drenchia is the smallest municipality in Friuli Venezia Giulia in terms of population. The municipality lies on the slopes of Mount Colovrat, which marks the border between Italy and Slovenia. On the Solarie pass, where there is a refuge, you can see a memorial stone erected in memory of Riccardo Giusto, the first Italian casualty of the Great War. The Colovrat area was under the responsibility of the 2nd Fleet of the Italian Army, which set up a vast and articulated defence system there, as its reliefs formed the extreme line of defence to prevent the enemy from penetrating the Friulian plain. The ridge was tragically affected by the Battle of Caporetto, which led to the retreat of the Italian troops to the Piave line, on the morning of 24 October 1917.
