Matajur

Matajur is the symbol of the Natisone Valleys, located on the border between Slovenia and Italy. From its summit, the view extends from the Adriatic Sea to the Julian Alps.

Matajur is the symbol mountain of the Natisone Valleys. From its 1641 metres, it overlooks both the Friulian plain with the Gulf of Trieste and the Julian Alps with the iconic peaks of Monte Nero, Tricorno and Canin. There are numerous paths to explore this mountain in both its natural and historical aspects. Legend has it that Alboin, king of the Lombards, climbed Matajur before beginning the conquest of the peninsula. The conquest of the peak by Lieutenant Rommel on 26 October 1917, during the dramatic days of the Battle of Caporetto, is historically established. Refreshments and hospitality can be found in the two shelters located at 1554 m - Dom Na Matajure and 1320 m - Rifugio G. G. Pelizzo, respectively. The latter is connected by a convenient asphalt road.
