The Antro Bank Slab

A symbol of Benecia in Venetian times, the slab is still well preserved in the village of Biacis.

Biacis, located on the right bank of the Natisone River, lies near the Grotta di Antro. Between Biacis and Cras, there is a Roman bridge - probably rebuilt in the early medieval period - and immediately above the village, the small church of St. James and St. Anne (dating back to the 12th-13th centuries, but rebuilt after the earthquake of 1511, in 1700 and after the 1976 earthquake), which houses under its portico the Antro Bank Slab, around which the meetings 'sosednje' of the heads of families of the Bank of Antro took, place under the Patriarchate of Aquileia and the Republic of Venice until 1797. Just beyond, you can see the reconstructed tower of the Ahrensperg Castle, which was part of the defence system of the road from Forum Julii (Cividale) towards Noricum. The castle is mentioned as early as 1251.
