Discovered in 1925, Grotta Nuova of Villanova is the largest 'contact' cavity between two different rock types that can be visited in Europe.
Unique for its morphological characteristics, Grotta Nuova di Villanova is a karstic cavity formed by two different types of rock and therefore called 'contact'. With tunnels ploughed by an underground stream that winds its way for about 8 kilometres, the cave is the largest of those that can be visited in Europe.
The cave was discovered in 1925 by Pietro Negro of Villanova and was named 'new' to distinguish it from the other cave already known in the area, in Doviza, which was known as Grotta di Villanova.
