Castle of Cergneu

All that remains today of the medieval castle of Cergneu (Nimis) are the ruins, visible in the vicinity of the small church of Santa Maria di Cergneu.

A short distance from the small church of Santa Maria di Cergneu are the remains of the Cergneu Castle. The latter was inherited by Voldarico, Marquis of Tuscany and descendant of the powerful Bavarian Moosburg family on his mother's side, who in 1170 donated it, together with the castles of Attimis (Superiore, Inferiore and Partistagno) and other properties, to the Patriarch of Aquileia. In turn, the Patriarch granted the fiefdom to the Savorgnan lords. The ruins that remain today still belong to the descendants of this family (from 1480 known as the Savorgnan di Brazzà-Cergneu).
The castle was inhabited until the 15th century and in 1511, following damage during an earthquake, it was abandoned for good.
